3rd Grade

Aboriginal Dot Art

The thirds graders at Rice Creek learned Aboriginal culture and the artwork they create. We started by learning how to draw animals. Rather than learning how to draw one animal, we learned that we can draw any animal by first identifying simple shapes and lines that make up the shape. As an example, I asked the students to tell me some shapes they could find in a duck. We identified an oval for the body, lines for each of the legs and neck, and a triangle for the head and beak. Once we drew the simple shapes, all we had to do was outline around and add details! Each student choose their own animal to draw and then began their dot paintings. When we made our dot paintings, we made sure to include different types of patterns, created by lines, shapes, and color.
