Artist and Educator

Hello! I am a student at the University of South Carolina pursuing a degree in Art Education. I will graduate in May of 2019 and look forward to starting my career here in the Midlands. As an art teacher, my main goal for my students is for them to develop a growth mindset. I want every student of mine to understand that art, just like every other skill, is not a talent you are born with, but a skill you can learn through practice. I hope that through my class I can create a space where they feel comfortable creating without worry about whether their art looks "good enough". Instead, they should focus on whether they have accomplished something they thought they couldn't do before they started. In addition, I'd like my students to develop the creativity, problem solving, and critical thinking skills necessary for the future job market. Using art as the medium, they can develop these skills without the risks of high-stakes testing and learn these skills that are transferable across all areas of their lives. Finally, I hope my students develop a love and appreciation for the arts. Whether they choose it as a career or not, they can have the opportunity to develop a new hobby or at least develop the visual literacy skills needed to understand the artwork they may see at museums. Through understanding and creating art, they will develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
